Lucas Debargue is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars in contemporary piano music, whose incredible talent, artistic vision, and creative freedom have mesmerized critics and audiences alike since the 2015 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. The world press compared his impact to Glenn Gould's Moscow performance during the Cold War or Van Cliburn's victory at the Tchaikovsky Competition. SONY Classical quickly signed him, releasing five albums featuring his playing. Debargue draws inspiration from literature, painting, cinema, and jazz while dedicating much of his time to composing.
He is not the typical young piano virtuoso. Born in Paris, Debargue did not come from a musical family and only started playing the piano at age 11. He paused his studies at 15, played bass guitar in a rock band, and earned a degree in literature. Meeting celebrated piano teacher Rena Shereshevskaya was a turning point, inspiring him to commit to music at 20.
Today, Debargue performs solo and with leading orchestras in the world's most prestigious concert halls, including the Berlin Philharmonie, Amsterdam Concertgebouw, Vienna Konzerthaus, Paris Théâtre des Champs Elysées, Paris Philharmonie, London Wigmore Hall, Royal Festival Hall, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Cologne Philharmonie, Tokyo Suntory Hall, and Carnegie Hall in New York. He regularly collaborates with Valery Gergiev, Mikhail Pletnev, Vladimir Jurowski, Andrey Boreyko, Tugan Sokhiev, Vladimir Spivakov, and Bertrand de Billy. His chamber music partners include Gidon Kremer, Janine Jansen, and Martin Fröst.
