Santiago Cañón-Valencia arrives at the Auer Festival with a programme featuring Johann Sebastian Bach's music and pieces from his much-praised latest solo album, including works by contemporary Colombian composers and his own compositions, as well as Osvaldo Golijov's Omaramor, inspired by the young tango composer Carlos Gardel's "My Buenos Aires."
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, in 1995, Santiago Cañón-Valencia debuted with the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of six. He has since matured into an artist recognised among the greatest. He has won numerous prestigious international cello competitions, including third place at the 2017 Queen Elisabeth International Competition and the audience prize at the 2019 Tchaikovsky Competition, leading to a global solo career. He has performed with the Mariinsky Orchestra under Valery Gergiev and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach. Cañón-Valencia enjoys collaborating with contemporary composers, premiering works dedicated to him worldwide, such as those by Carlos Izcaray and Jorge Humberto Pinzón. He is also known for his passion for painting and photography.
