The Duka Elemér & Gipsy Chamber Orchestra is far more than an ensemble. It is an artistic mission: a bridge between classical music, traditional Hungarian Roma music, and contemporary sound worlds. At its centre stands an exceptionally rare artistic role—that of Elemér Duka, a virtuoso cellist who performs not only as a soloist but also as a “lead fiddler” on the cello. This formation is unique on the international stage.
The ensemble was founded with the aim of reimagining the traditions of classical chamber music and presenting a distinctive sound world for 21st-century audiences. Its sonic identity is enriched by traditional Hungarian instruments such as the cimbalom, which gives the group a strong cultural imprint.
The repertoire is strikingly diverse: alongside works by Kodály, Bartók, Popper, Liszt, and Weiner, the ensemble performs original compositions and arrangements, as well as reimagined film music built on classical foundations. Its goal is not only to preserve musical heritage, but to create new artistic value—reaching younger audiences and expanding the reach of classical music.
The Gipsy Chamber Orchestra does not simply follow tradition—it redefines it.
Its sound world fuses the noble traditions of classical chamber music with the vibrant rhythms of Roma music in a distinctive instrumentation. Cimbalom, violin, viola, double bass, and solo cello combine into a unified musical organism capable of engaging both classical audiences and new generations alike.
The ensemble has appeared at numerous prestigious international festivals, including KaposFest (Hungary), the Rome Chamber Music Festival, Manchester Classical Days (UK), the Split Summer Festival (Croatia), and events organised by the Liszt Institute in Paris, Brussels, Zagreb, and Stuttgart.
