„We create a genre born from Hungarian instrumental traditions – now set out to explore the world.”

András Nagy Csomor and His Band draw primarily from the rich musical heritage of the Carpathian Basin. Their aim is to reinterpret folk music, café gypsy music, jazz, flamenco, salsa, Balkan and other world music genres in their own unique voice — while preserving the essential spirit and authenticity of each style.

They bring these diverse influences to the stage in a form that is both professionally sophisticated and easily accessible to general audiences, delivering concerts filled with infectious energy and atmosphere. Their mission is to reintroduce Hungarian folk and café gypsy music — revitalised and aligned with the expectations of our time — into the mainstream cultural dialogue.

The ensemble has performed across the Carpathian Basin, appearing regularly at major events such as the Balatonfüred Wine Weeks, the Gombaszög Summer Camp, the Tusványos Festival, and the MCC Festival. They have also given concerts at the Hungarian Academy in Rome.

Roby Lakatos

„I am the seventh-generation descendant of János Bihari, the reformer of the csárdás. He invented the verbunkos style, composed csárdás dances, and even inspired the main themes of Brahms’s Hungarian Dances and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies. They say that something always returns in the seventh generation — that would be me.”

Roby Lakatos is an internationally acclaimed Hungarian violin virtuoso and a direct descendant of János Bihari, the legendary composer of verbunkos music and one of the key figures of Hungarian musical Romanticism. With groundbreaking talent and early support from Yehudi Menuhin, Lakatos has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to the Vatican and the Royal Albert Hall. His artistry has been recognised around the world with numerous awards and honours.

Among his accolades, Roby Lakatos was made an honorary citizen of Mexico, and in 2021, he received a prestigious musical award from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in Madrid.

His extraordinary talent was evident from a young age: at six, he performed at the Dankó Pista memorial concert on the maestro’s own violin; by eleven, he was already playing in Sándor Járóka’s ensemble.

In 1984, he took the first step toward an international career when his first ensemble signed a contract in Belgium. His global fame rests not only on his impeccable technical skill, but also on his unmistakable, instantly recognisable sound and style, which resonates with audiences far beyond Hungary.

The international music world credits Roby Lakatos with the creation and popularisation of the “unorthodox gypsy fusion” genre — a bold, innovative blend of Hungarian gypsy music with classical, Balkan, klezmer, and jazz elements. His success remains unbroken; through his music, he continues to bring Hungarian culture to international audiences. No matter where in the world he performs, he proudly identifies himself as a Hungarian violinist.
